NASA is on the verge of launching one of its most ambitious space observatories in years.
The Mission
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has been cleared for final launch preparations, with liftoff targeted for August 30 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The telescope is now fully enclosed inside its launch fairing and undergoing final checks.
What It Will Do
Once operational, Roman will have a field of view roughly 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope while maintaining similar image sharpness, allowing it to survey vast swaths of the sky far more efficiently. Its primary goals include mapping the distribution of dark matter, studying the mysterious force known as dark energy, and discovering thousands of new exoplanets through gravitational microlensing.

What Comes Next
After launch, Roman will travel to a stable orbital point nearly a million miles from Earth, where it will begin a multi-year survey mission expected to run through the early 2030s.
